Then God said, “I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food.” ~Genesis 1:29
My family and I have been enjoying the blessings of owning part of a farm. We don’t grow the vegetables ourselves or tend to the fields. In fact, I’ve never even seen “our farm.” It’s 4 hrs away from the city we live in. And even though I have never laid eyes on the perfectly spaced rows of plants in the fields or looked into the eyes of the farmers who work to provide fresh organic produce for my family week after week, I know God had His hand in leading me to this CSA and wants our family to support it and enjoy it.
I want to honor God in everything I do. I want to care for myself and the family He has entrusted to me and I want our health, wellness, and lifestyle to be a picture to the world of how beautiful and functional our bodies are supposed to be, and how He intended us to use them. I get sad when I look around the world today…even at myself sometimes…and I see how sick and tired our bodies are from the “food” we eat, the sedentary lifestyles that our society seems to have adopted, and the emotional toll of stress, disease, violence, or loneliness. I know there is better out there for us and I know God has a better idea of how to care and nourish our bodies properly. I am hungry to find that correct balance in life spiritually, emotionally, and physically and I need to teach my children how to obtain it as well.
I believe strongly that food can affect every aspect of our lives and can also be the answer to many of life’s issues. But not just any food. REAL food. Food that comes from the ground…living food…that was designed by God to nourish our bodies. The kind of food that can be created into meals and shared with others in fellowship, nourishing relationships and providing opportunities to connect with one another.
When I read verses in the bible like the one I wrote above, I see that God clearly has a plan for us and what he designed our bodies to be eating. I have taken this to heart and I have begun to diligently prepare foods for my family that come from the ground. Since this process has begun (about 5 yrs ago!), I have seen significant changes in my family and their health and wellness. We aren’t perfect. We still enjoy an occasional take out pizza or scoop of ice cream from local eateries. That teaches my children about balance and moderation.
I have seen many people struggle with feeding their families healthy, nourishing foods. The odds are against us in our media and marketing saturated, chaotic, busy world to accomplish this task easily. I hear it’s too complicated for our busy lifestyle or that it’s just too expensive. I believe it’s about where you place your priorities. Changing the way I feed my family became a huge priority to me because God pointed out in scripture that nourishing our bodies is to be a priority!
Because I see how God really intended this food thing to be, I feel obligated and called to gently share with everyone who is willing to listen, or asks questions, how I made changes happen here in our home. I believe God is asking me to train my family to be an example to others close, and not so close, on how to honor Him in this one category of our lives. So I will do so here in future writings, as well as in face to face conversations, with words, and by example without words.
I’ve seen great strides in my family over the years with regards to eating and living a “healthier-than-the-norm” lifestyle. It makes me proud. We are healthy. We are strong. We are balanced and we are nourished. We are energized and willing to continue moving forward as God calls us to in this area of our lives. And isn’t that what He has intended for us all along…to honor and glorify Him in all that we do? Yes, even in the simple category of food.
